Tips For Using The Heating Stove In A Cabin

Home & Garden Blog

If you have a small cabin or cottage, especially one that you only use seasonally, then it often makes sense to heat it with a wood stove. This allows you to avoid running gas lines or electric wires to a heater. It's also more affordable than having a central HVAC system installed. However, it may take you a little time to adapt to having and using a heating stove. Here are some tips to help you make the transition and use your wood heating stove as efficiently and effectively as possible.

Make sure you're using dry, seasoned wood

The wood you use makes all the difference in how well your heating stove will work. Newer, greener wood will not burn very hot, which will cause creosote to build up in and around your stove. Plus, it will make a lot of smoke. You really want your wood to be seasoned, which means it will have to sit for a year or more after being felled. Also, choose hardwood species over pine. Seasoned hardwood will burn long and hot, providing lots of clean heat for your cabin.

Cut the wood to fit inside your stove

Measure the opening to your wood heating stove, and see how large it is. Then, make sure your wood is cut to fit inside that opening. If you purchase wood in bulk from someone, try to let them know these measurements as far in advance as possible. This way, they can try to cut the wood to fit inside your stove. If you have a standard or larger stove, this won't be an issue, but if you have a really small stove you may need to keep an axe handy to cut down pieces that are too large.

Control the airflow

The key to controlling a heating stove is controlling the amount of air the fire gets. Most stoves have a door you can open and close, plus a few vent openings you can open and close. Locate these, figure out how they work, and use them. Give the fire more air when you want it hotter, and cut off the airflow to cool it down. Over time, you'll learn how open your vents need to be for certain levels of fire.

With the tips above, you can more effectively and efficiently use your wood heating stove. There's nothing quite like the warm, cozy atmosphere generated by these stoves.
