Learn How To Clean The A Water Softener's Brine Tank

Home & Garden Blog

A water softening system can extend the life of the plumbing in your home. Metals from water are eliminated with a brine mixture, resulting in cleaner water that mixes well with soaps and detergents. After the water softener installation, you should clean its interior each year. The following steps will teach you how to clean the inside of a tank and fill it up with a brine solution once finished.

Materials

  • bucket of warm water
  • wooden stick
  • water hose
  • mild detergent
  • soft-bristled scrub brush
  • chlorine bleach
  • rubber gloves
  • bags of salt designed for water softening systems

Disconnect The System, Remove And Empty The Tank

Disconnect the power to the water softening system. Remove the brine tank from the system and carry it outdoors. Empty the tank in an area that is not covered with plants, grass, or trees. The water inside of the tank can harm plants if they come into contact with it. If there is a buildup of salt inside of the tank, pour warm water on it to help it dissolve. Press a wooden stick against the solid salt to break it up into smaller pieces if the water does not work.

Clean The Tank And The Screen

Fill a bucket with clean water and add a small amount of mild detergent to it. Stir the soap into the water until suds form. Apply the soapy solution to the inside of the water softener's tank with a soft-bristled scrub brush. Move the cleaning tool firmly over the interior surfaces. Pull out the screen that is located at the bottom of the tank and use the soapy water and scrub brush to eliminate stains from it.

If any severe stains are present, add a little bit of chlorine bleach to the cleaning solution. Rinse the inside of the tank and the screen with a steady stream of water.

Fill And Reconnect The Tank

Add clean water to the brine tank until the water level is several inches from the top of the tank. Add salt granules or tablets to the tank. You will need to follow the instructions in the owner's manual that came with your system in order to determine how much salt to add. Different models and tank sizes require a specific amount of salt. If you cannot locate the manual that came with your purchase, call the company that you bought it from for assistance.

Once the tank is filled, reattach it to the water softening system. Turn on the system. The salt may take a couple hours to dissolve. Wait for this to occur before using the plumbing inside of your home.
