How To Keep Your Patio Furniture Looking Like New

Home & Garden Blog

It's nice to have patio furniture to relax in on a warm summer day with your family. The cost of patio furniture can be expensive though, so the last thing you want to do is buy new furniture each year because you didn't maintain your existing furniture properly. It doesn't take a lot to maintain patio furniture, but it should be done. See below for helpful tips on how to keep your patio furniture looking like new.

Resin

Resin or plastic furniture can be easily cleaned using bleach and a sponge. These chairs can stain in the seat, so for more stubborn stains you can use a scrubbing pad and bleach. Rinse them clean with your garden hose.

Wicker

Wicker furniture can be easily cleaned using a mixture of 1/4 cup of dish soap and a gallon of warm water. Soak your furniture with the garden hose and then using a soft scrub brush, lightly scrub your furniture. Rinse it clean with the garden hose.

Metal

Metal furniture can also be cleaned using the soap and water mixture. Use a soft sponge to wipe metal furniture clean, and then rinse with the garden hose. If your metal furniture is beginning to rust, you should sand down the rust spot, and then wipe it clean. Then use a rust preventative spray paint in a matching color.

Cushions

Clean up your patio cushions using a spray bottle filled about 3/4 of the way with warm water. Add 1 tsp. of borax and 1 tsp. of dish soap to the spray bottle. Shake it gently to mix up the ingredients. Remove your patio cushions from your furniture, and lay them out on a clean surface. Brush off any leaves or larger debris, and then spray the mixture onto your cushions. Using a soft scrub brush, scrub away any noticeable stains or dirt. Then spray them clean with your garden hose. Allow them to dry in the sun on an elevated surface so the water can drip off. Once they are dry, use a water-repelling, protectant spray on your cushions and pillows to help keep them looking great.

Cleaning your patio furniture is one thing, but storing it properly will also help keep it looking like new. In winter months when you aren't using your patio furniture, store your furniture in a covered area such as a shed or garage. If this isn't possible, invest in patio furniture covers to help protect the furniture from the weather, but bring patio cushions and pillows indoors.

Patio furniture for sale can get expensive, take good care of it to help extend the life and enjoy your furniture for quite some time.
