Spice Up Your Reading Nook With These 3 Unique DIY Bookends

Home & Garden Blog

If you have recently purchased a new bookshelf and it looking a little bare, dress it up with a creative and unique DIY bookend. Don't know where to start? Don't worry. Use these three ideas to get you started:

1. Vintage Records

If you love music and vintage style, consider using records as bookends. It creates a fun little flair on your bookshelf and shows off your style—it also shows off your love of music. If you don't want to use your favorite records, head to a thrift store to pick up a few records you wouldn't mind losing forever.

You can create record bookends by filling a tub or deep sink with hot, boiling water. Once the tub is filled with water, submerge the record into it. About halfway down the record, press it into the surface of the tub or sink. Once bent, remove the record and continue to flatten it on a smooth surface such as a countertop. Let it dry and attach felt to the underside of the record (the flat part that will sit on the bookshelf) with hot glue. When finished, place one on either side of your books.

2. Decorated Bricks

Bricks are an incredibly affordable way to add spice to your bookshelf. Although a standard brick may sound boring and ugly, you can easily make it beautiful with paint, fabric—or even wrapping paper.

To dress up bricks for bookends, clean them off under cool running water and let them dry. Once the brick is dry, paint it. You can paint it with a pattern, design, or even a single color. If you are particularly artistic, you can even paint it to resemble the cover of your favorite books. If you aren't so artistic and you don't want to bother with paint, consider covering it up. You can use fabric, decorative paper, or wrapping paper to disguise the brick. If you are wrapping the brick, make sure you use hot glue to keep the wrapping on the brick.

3. Circuit Boards

Show off your inner nerd or technical prowess with circuit board bookends. You can find cheap circuit boards that no longer work at thrift stores or online, so you don't have to ruin your working computer parts. Once you have your circuit boards, attach them together with hot glue. Just make sure you position the circuit boards so that one is flat and one is upright—and although you can glue them together wherever you wish, it is best to do it in the center of the circuit board so that part of the board is exposed and can be covered up with books.

Other ideas for unique DIY bookends include plaster-filled seashells, real books, and figurines painted fun colors. No matter what type of bookend you choose to make, ensure it reflects your overall style and personality.

If you do not want to make a homemade bookend, you can purchase all types of unique bookends online.
